Pediatric Specialty comprehensive assessments

If you have an infant, child or adolescent who has experienced a disabling injury or illness, such as brain injury, spinal cord injury, burns, respiratory impairments or neurological illnesses, you may be confronted with a wide range of challenges. These challenges may interfere with their independence or limit their full participation in the things that are important to them, such as school, work, friends, family and leisure. These limitations may be evident today, or may occur in the future with the normal development process. That is why Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals focuses on maintaining long-term health and lifelong care planning, including prevention of any secondary complications.

Madonna TherapyPlus wants to help you overcome current challenges and prevent others in the future by addressing issues and serving as a resource for questions or concerns as your child continues to develop into an adult.

A comprehensive assessment takes into consideration your child’s unique, individual needs. These needs are often associated with medical, physical, cognitive (thinking), social-emotional or communication functions and may impact a variety of life areas, such as school, work, personal care, household chores, social/leisure, and personal relationships. Madonna has team of pediatric experts  available to provide assistance where needed:

How it Works

Madonna’s Comprehensive Clinic Assessment Coordinator will contact you by telephone and will ask you questions about how your child is doing in a wide variety of areas. If you need to be connected with specific resources, this may be provided over the telephone, and if your child is having difficulties and you would like him/her seen by the Adolescent and Child Assessment team, the coordinator will discuss the next steps. If you are new to the area, or have not had an inpatient rehabilitation stay at Madonna but wish to receive this comprehensive assessment, please talk with your primary physician about this service. If he/ she feels this would be of benefit, then please have them contact us.

Your Childs Assessment

Your child’s assessment is tailored to their specific needs, so although you may be asked about their function in those areas, it is likely that not everything listed will be scheduled. Based on the types of things which need to be assessed, the appointment may last a few hours or up to a day and a half. Housing may be available, if needed, for a nominal fee. During the assessment, the team will provide you and your child with assessment results and recommendations, and a formal report will be sent to his/her primary care physician.

Some of the areas that might be addressed during the comprehensive assessment include:

• Rehabilitation Technology, including specialized equipment for computer access, environmental control, and/or electronic aides to daily living

• Balance and vestibular function

• Swallowing and feeding

• Communication, including understanding, expressing, reading and writing

• Adjustment to disability
