The arrival of colder temperatures and changing leaves also brings yard work and fall activities. This can be strenuous on the body. Here are some tips on how to avoid injury to let you enjoy the season.

  • An informal warmup may be the single most important activity you can perform. An appropriate warmup will increase blood flow to the body and allow muscles to perform at their highest ability. A warmup can be as simple as walking around the yard.
  • Proper body mechanics, such as bending with your knees and not your back, are essential for avoiding injuries. Holding heavier items closer to your body is another way to avoid a visit to the doctor.
  • Breaks and periodic activity changes are a great way of avoiding muscular fatigue and overuse of the muscles.
  • It is important to properly handle the equipment you use. Always utilize a strap if it is available and interchange which side of the body is using the equipment.
